Plumbing permits vary by state and county, but most counties will require a permit for the following plumbing projects:
Replacement: When replacing your piping, water heater, sewer lines, and for all new plumbing installations – you will need to obtain a plumbing permit. This also includes re-locating any plumbing to a new location.
Emergency: Any emergency repair, modification, or replacing of pipes that have burst due to being frozen requires a plumbing permit.
Remodel: When adding onto your home or installing a new bathroom requires relocating plumbing, installing new sewer lines, water lines, and building exterior drains – all of which need to have plumbing permit.
How to obtain a plumbing permit: If you’re hiring a licensed plumber to perform the work, that person and or company will be held responsible for obtaining the plumbing permit. However, if you will be performing the work yourself, you will need to go to your local building department or to the Building Codes Division located in your area. This process involves paying a fee and filling out an extensive form about the work needing to be conducted.
