For those that live in an apartment or don’t have the means of installing central air conditioning, window air conditioning units are the only way to stay cool during the hot summer months. Window air conditioning units don’t come cheap – one that will do a decent job at cooling your space runs around at least $250 to $300. So, when this expensive unit begins failing or just fails miserably from the beginning at cooling your space you need to do some serious troubleshooting before returning, fixing, or replacing your a/c unit.
Not big enough – If you have very open space such as a large studio or open floor plan where there are no doors to separate space, this might be the issue. The space is too large for the window unit to cool down, it’ll simply run constantly, increasing your electric bill without even being remotely effective. If you have a new air conditioning unit and it’s never seemed to do the job, consider returning it and upgrading for a larger unit that will effectively and more efficiently cool your home down.
Lack of airflow – Although the window unit has a fan, it can’t do it all on its own. Make sure you turn on the ceiling fans and have them run counterclockwise, this will push the air down on you and keep the cool air circulating. If you don’t have any ceiling fans, plug in regular fans around your space to help keep the cool air circulating. Be sure to use the oscillating function if the fan has it.
Dirty filter – If you didn’t clean the filter before installing your unit for the summer, do so immediately. When dust and hair clog the filter, it won’t be able to cool your space efficiently. Be sure to clean the filter at least once a month depending on how often you’re using it. If you have any pets, you might want to clean it twice a month to keep it clear of animal hair that will make its way in.
Improperly installed – Window air conditioning units should be slightly tilted outwards. The air conditioner not only blows cool air from your home but removes moisture from the air. Tilting the air conditioner outwards allows the water to drain and continue cooling your home. If it is not able to drain, it will stop pulling moisture from the air and will be unable to cool your home. Another common problem is having your unit be improperly insulated. Make sure to use all the insulation that is provided with your window unit to keep warm air out and cool air in.
Outdated – A well cared for window air conditioning unit has a lifespan of up to 10 years. If your unit is 8 to 10 years old and it has stopped cooling your home efficiently, it’s time to toss it out and upgrade for a unit.
