Many people have their preference with either putting the fan setting on their HVAC unit to auto or on. What it comes down to is it’s just a comfort choice. Either setting will do the job of heating or cooling your home, however, each setting has its benefits.
Most people like to keep the fan setting on auto. The auto setting means the fan will only come on when either the heat or air-conditioning requires it to come on in order to reach the desired temperature.
When the fan setting is set to on, this means the fan will run continuously 24 hours a day. Most people don’t like the fan running for several reasons. The conception is that this will raise electricity costs, it’s noisy or it can sometimes make the house feel a bit drafty.
Despite these negative connotations, there are several benefits to keep the fan running all the time. Leaving the fan setting set to on will make the temperature in the house more even – reducing hot or cold spots. When the fan is running continuously, the air is constantly being filtered which cuts down on dust.
A major misconception is that running a fan continually will cause the motor to wear out sooner. This is not the case. In fact, a motor gets much more wear and tear on starting up than just running at a constant speed.
