With the temperature steadily beginning to drop, it’s important to get a jump start on preparing for winter. Properly insulating your hot water heater should be at the top of your list. According to energy.gov, insulating your hot water tank has the potential to save up to 16 percent on your energy bill. Take advantage of this savings with this affordable and easy DIY project.
Before you get started, inspect your hot water heater for any leaks and make any and all repairs. Some utilities also offer discounts on water heater blanket kits or offer them for free – this is a great way to save some money, especially with the holidays coming.
Step 1: Once you have the hot water blanket kit, turn off the hot water tank.
Step 2: Using a tape measure, take the measurements of the hot water tank. Be sure to leave plenty of room at the top as to not block the vent.
Step 3: Cut the blanket to the proper size based upon your measurements. Next, wrap the blanket around the water heater and either have someone else hold it in place, or tape it temporarily to the unit.
Step 4: Using a marker, trace where all of the controls, valves and vents are onto the blanket, these will need to be cut out so they won’t be blocked. It’s important to make all holes at least one inch wider, especially for the valve and burner on gas units. Once you have all of your markings, remove the blanket and cut out the markings.
Step 5: Securely and properly install the blanket to the hot water heater. Carefully match up all of the holes with the controls. Follow the specific instructions of the blanket kit for popper installation.
Step 6: Once the blanket is securely in place, turn the hot water heater back on.
