How to Maintain Your Washer and Dryer

Your washer and dryer are two very essential appliances in your home. Without these valued appliances, you’d have to lug your clothes to and from the laundry mat. Not only are your washer and dryer a necessity in your home, they are also very expensive appliances. Get the most out of your washer and dryer and learn what you can do to make sure they last as long as possible.

Hose checkThe hoses of your washing machine can become cracked, kinked, stiff or brittle. Once a year you should inspect your washer hoses for these signs. If you find that you need to replace a hose, make sure you replace it with a stainless steel-clad hose. Keeping your washer a few inches from the wall will also prevent kinks and cracks from occurring.

Remove lintAn excess amount of lint in your dryer will make your clothes take much longer to dry. You should always clean out the lint filter after every use. A full lint filter will not only decrease the efficiency of your dryer but it can also be a fire hazard. Be sure not to neglect your lint vent as well. Every 3 to 6 months you should remove lint from the vent by disconnecting the exhaust pipe and cleaning out the lint. You can also use a flexible vent brush or vacuum hose and put it into the pipe to clean out hard to reach lint.

Dry washerA wet washer not in use is the perfect place for mold to grow. Your washer is one of the last places you want mold. After using the washer, leave the door or lid open so it can air dry, this will ensure you a mold free washer.

Keep it cleanIt may seem a little redundant to clean your washing machine, but it is necessary because odors can occur and residue from very dirty clothes can be left behind in the washing machine. Hard water can also cause a buildup of lime and soap scum, causing your washing machine to run slower.

To naturally clean your washing machine, add 3 cups of white vinegar and ½ cup of baking soda. Run your washer on the hottest setting and with the largest load size. The vinegar will kill any germs lurking in your washing machine while the baking soda will eliminate any odors and remove soap scum.
