DIY Radiator Makeover – Say Goodbye to Your Ugly Radiator

Radiators can be a bit of an eyesore in your home. They always seem to clash with the décor and style of the room. If you didn’t need it to heat your home, you would have torn the radiator off of the wall years ago. There is no need for radiators to ruin your charming home, there are many ways you can make your radiator blend in or tastefully stand out.

A bench – Have you ever thought about building a bench over your radiator? A bench will give you additional seating in the room and is a stylish way to cover up that ugly radiator. This is especially a good idea for mudrooms, as it gives you a place to sit while putting on your shoes.

Fireplace – With just a little bit of work, you can create the cozy look of a fireplace. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) works great to build a fireplace structure. Just be sure to leave plenty of space all around your radiator and cut a hole to the front of your radiator so it will be completely exposed – this will allow heat to move freely. Black aluminum sheeting when placed over the hole will hide the radiator while also effectively heating your home.

Counter space – Add some counter space in your kitchen with slats and a butcher’s block. Choose a slat color that goes well with your kitchen and you’ve got yourself another space to chop vegetables!

Desk – Is your radiator in the way of where you’d put an office desk? Build your desk right over the radiator! Remove the back two legs and attach the back of the desk securely to the wall. Imagine how much work you’ll accomplish when your feet are nice and toasty!

Simple ledge – For those on a budget, placing a marble slab on top of your radiator will improve the look of the radiator. This is a great place to put plants, room décor and other decorations. This radiator idea is great in a bathroom – it makes for the perfect place to put candles.

Paint – Make the radiator a part of the room. You can paint it the same color as the wall or match it with other major pieces in the room. Cast iron radiators look great in metallic silver or gold – especially if they have a unique design engraved on the radiator. You can also choose to make your radiator the focal point of the room, painting it a crazy color or covering it with a fun stencil.
