Difference between Water Softeners & Water Conditioners
While water softeners and water conditioners are both used to treat hard water, they are different types of systems.
Water softeners eliminate hard water ions. These ions are removed and replace with sodium ions.
Hard water ions removed by water softeners include:
Water conditioners manipulate hard water ions rather than removing them from your water. This process leaves minerals in the water but prevents them from building up and damaging your plumbing system. Because these minerals can be healthy, there are various benefits to leaving them in the water. In addition to treating hard water, a water softener treats contaminants, such as bacteria and algae, that tend to build up on surfaces.
How Does Water Softening Work?
Water softening is the process of softening water through the removal of harsh chemicals and contaminants. This process involves an ion exchange in which hard mineral ions (such as calcium and magnesium) are replaced by sodium ions. The result of introducing sodium ions into the water source is a significant reduction in hard mineral ions. While hard mineral ions affect cleansing products, sodium ions do not. This means, you can use less product to achieve better results when it comes to washing clothes, shampooing hair, cleaning dishes, washing your body, and more.
Water softening systems are placed in plumbing systems close to where water enters the home. As water passes through the system, hard minerals attach to a special resin bed inside of the system, which in turn causes the system to release the sodium ions into the water. The water that flows throughout the home now contains dissolved sodium chloride (salt) rather than dissolved hard minerals.
Benefits of Water Softening
Water softening eliminates the presence of minerals in hard water, which in turn eliminates hard water symptoms.
The many benefits of water softening include:
Brighter, softer, and longer lasting clothes
Stain-free shower and tub
Shinier and more manageable hair
Better performance of cleansing products such as detergent, shampoo, and soap
More efficient plumbing appliances (such as your water heater)
