Childproof Outlet Covers: What You Need to Know

Bringing a baby into the world is a beautiful and natural thing. You become parents, a family, and a trio. This time of bliss brings months of preparation – diapers, baby clothes, and endless hours spent reading about the little one growing inside your body. Before the baby arrives is one of the most opportune times to childproof your home because before you know it, your little bundle of joy will be crawling, walking, and climbing!

When it comes to childproofing your electrical outlets, not just any childproof cover will do. Consider the pros and cons of each type and select the type of outlet cover that will best suit your lifestyle and most importantly, protect your child.

Outlet Plugs: These are little plugs that are inserted directly into the holes of the outlet. These are great to have on hand when traveling – especially to hotels and other places that aren’t particularly child-friendly.

The bad side is depending on the dexterity and the determination of your child – these plugs can be removed which then become a choking hazard. Use caution if you decide to opt for this type of outlet cover.

Sliding Outlet Covers: This is more of a permanent solution for your electrical outlets. This is an entirely new electrical outlet that will replace your regular cover. This cover functions by sliding the cover that is blocking the holes of the outlet over and then inserting the prongs into the outlet. When you unplug the cord from the outlet it automatically slides back into place, easily blocking access to the outlet.

Box Cover: This type of electrical outlet cover is used for devices that are always plugged in but are in reach of children. The box is installed so that it covers the entire outlet including the plug of the device only leaving a small hole at the bottom for the cord to run out of. They come in various sizes so they can cover large or small plugs.
